In 1982, after graduating from the Pharmacy Department of Zhejiang Medical University, Hu Jiqiang entered the predecessor of Kang Enbei, Lanxi Yunshan Pharmaceutical Factory, and became the No. 138 employee of the plant.

 

The street drug factory, founded in 1969, was transformed from an apiary, which produced pollen and bee products in the early days. Since the mid-1970s, the production of medicines has gradually begun. As the first university student from the factory, Hu Jiqiang was appointed to the task of developing new products. In February 1984, Jinhua Lanxi was listed as a pilot county for system reform by the state. Among the local state-owned and collective enterprises, a large number of young people with talents were promoted to leadership positions. At the time, Hu Jiqiang, who was only 23 years old at the time of entering the factory, was outstanding because of his outstanding performance and was selected as the deputy director. Like many collectively owned enterprises that are transitioning from a planned economy to a market economy, the Yunshan Pharmaceutical Factory was floating, old equipment, single product, and low margins. Old employees were lazy and lazy, and young employees were mostly uneasy.

 

In the face of many difficulties, the young Hu Jiqiang did not retreat. He drastically implemented a series of reform measures: internally, broke the original "big pot" and "iron rice bowl" system, established an economic responsibility system, and implemented distribution according to work; Externally, we strive to break through the "underwriting" system of the planned era, set up our own sales team, and "go out" to develop sales channels and product markets.

 

Under the auspices of Hu Jiqiang, Yunshan Pharmaceutical Factory developed a new drug in 1985, Qianliekang. This is the world's first drug that uses pollen as the main raw material to treat prostate diseases, filling the market gap of domestic prostate drugs.

 

This product with good efficacy and small side effects was highly successful once it was introduced to the market. In the same year, it achieved sales of 80,000 bottles. Nowadays, Qianliekang is still the most popular prostate disease treatment drug in China.

 

The small pharmaceutical factories that have gone from bad to worse have embarked on a high-speed development. In 1984, Yunshan Pharmaceutical Factory had an annual output value of more than 5 million and a profit of more than 800,000. In 1987, sales increased to more than 30 million and the profit reached more than 5 million. From 1987 to 1989, the comprehensive economic benefits of the whole plant ranked first in the same industry in Zhejiang Province for three consecutive years.

Qian Likang’s shot was red, and the appearance of Yunshan Pharmaceutical Factory has changed dramatically. However, Hu Jiqiang is not satisfied with the status quo and enjoys its success. Instead, he has accelerated the pace of finding new growth poles.

 

In 1987, an expert who was familiar with Hu Jiqiang returned from a visit to Germany and called him. He provided a message: At that time, in Europe, a plant medicine made of Ginkgo biloba extract for the treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases was used. Very popular, but locally, the raw materials and labor costs of producing Ginkgo biloba extract are very expensive.

 

Hu Jiqiang, who has a keen market instinct, immediately shines. “Ginkgo trees are widely planted in China. If the Ginkgo biloba extract is produced by the Yunshan Pharmaceutical Factory, which produces botanicals, the cost can be reduced to a minimum.”

 

However, at the time, domestic pharmaceutical companies lacked an understanding of the components of the extract and did not have extraction techniques. In order to overcome the difficulties, Hu Jiqiang went to the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and found experts in this field to seek help.

 

In 1990, after the research, the Ginkgo biloba extract produced by Yunshan Pharmaceutical Factory was launched, which is a breakthrough for domestic enterprises. Also in this year, the name "Connbe" was born, and Lanxi Yunshan Pharmaceutical Factory was renamed Zhejiang Kangenbei Pharmaceutical Company. "Yesterday's Yunshan Pharmaceutical Factory said goodbye to you, today's Conba is coming to you." This is a unique name change notice, which is widely known.

 

Later, in 1992, Kang Enbei successfully developed the first modern plant medicine in China that meets international standards - Tianbaoning Ginkgo Leaf. By 1995, Tianbaoning's sales had reached about 80 million, and together with Qianliekang became the two major products of Kangenbei.

 

Since the 1990s, Kang Enbei's development has entered a fast lane. Enterprises and products have successively harvested a series of national and provincial honors and become a "star enterprise" in the industry. For the development of enterprises, talents, capital and market are the most important factors. It is also from this period that the urgently needed factor resources of enterprises can not be allocated in Lanxi. Hu Jiqiang gradually felt the bottleneck from geographical space constraints. .

 

He recalled: "At that time, we borrowed 500,000 yuan from a bank in Lanxi and went to Jinhua for approval." Coupled with the lack of attractiveness of high-level talents in county-level cities, Hu Jiqiang’s idea of ​​“going out to develop” is becoming more and more intense.

 

However, in China, corporate headquarters has always been a topic of indiscriminate discussion. Whether it is the company's own decision-making or local government approval, it is cautious. “I suggested that if Kang Enbei moved its headquarters to Hangzhou, the manufacturing center would still stay in Lanxi, and the main tax will still be paid in Lanxi, and promised to increase the tax revenue by 15% every year in the next few years. The company is even willing to deduct from the profits.” Hu Jiqiang said that his thoughts were bold and risky at the time, because the news will be brought to the outside world with doubts: Can Kangbe feel that Lanxi is not working?

 

In the end, Hu Jiqiang harvested a surprising ending: Lanxi County’s leadership research concluded that it is beneficial for Lanxi to go out and seek greater development in the long run. In May 1994, Zhejiang Kangenbei Group Co., Ltd. was established in Hangzhou and became the first local enterprise in Zhejiang Province to relocate its headquarters to Hangzhou.

However, no Chinese pharmaceutical company has entered the world’s top 50 prescription drug companies, and no drug has entered the world’s top 100 drug sales.
